20 QUESTIONS WITH ALEX DEBOGORSKI
December - January 2009-2010
This month we feature Alex Debogorski The Original Ice Road Trucker! We were lucky enough to meet Alex twice this year in our travels. Alex gave us great responses to the spotlight questions in typical Alex style. Alex has been working hard touring the country this year and we appreciate him taking some time out of his schedule to work with us on the spotlight. Thank you Alex!!
Alex Debogorski: Started in 1972 so 37 years.
TP: How did you get started in the industry?
Alex Debogorski: I started with hauling dump trucks of coal to Mckintyre Porcupine Coal Mine in Alberta Canada.
TP: What is your favorite brand and model of truck?
Alex Debogorski: Kenworth W900
TP: What is your favorite load to haul?
Alex Debogorski: Sail boat fuel, if it is getting paid for! (Insert Alex's trademark laugh here!)
TP: What is your favorite food on the road?
Alex Debogorski: 2 eggs over easy, bacon, American fries, coffee, toasted brown bread & honey.
TP: What is your favorite beverage on the road?
Alex Debogorski: Water.
TP: What music do you listen to when driving?
Alex Debogorski: A variety of music leaning toward country rock.
TP: What was your most challenging run so far?
Alex Debogorski: Fairbanks Alaska to Prudhoe Bay Alaska. Another challenge was hauling coal to Grand Cash Alberta Canada.
TP: What trade magazines / websites do your read / visit most?
Alex Debogorski: Not many, Auto, Truck & Equipment Trader magazines. I like checking out the old cars.
TP: What can you be found doing when you have downtime?
Alex Debogorski: I work. I haul gravel and topsoil & fix stuff. Actually all my hobbies are related to work.
TP: What is your most memorable moment as a driver?
Alex Debogorski: Doing first aid on another driver. Also stopping a fuel leak on a head on collision wreck.
TP: What is the biggest goal you would like to accomplish as a driver?
Alex Debogorski: Improving what the world thinks of the drivers and the industry.
TP: What tools / parts do you carry with you to keep your rig rolling?
Alex Debogorski: A variety. Air fittings, air line, electric wire, a spare alternator, filters, headlights, etc and a full set of tools.
TP: In your opinion what is the biggest obstacle truck drivers face today?
Alex Debogorski: The negative view of the general public.
TP: You do a LOT of shows and events. Do you have a favorite memory of them?
Alex Debogorski: Visiting a lady who was sick at home and a very big fan of Ice Road Truckers. It make her week.
TP: What one thing would you change with the industry if you could?
Alex Debogorski: Uniformity of the rules, regulations and fees, Country to Country, State to State, Province to Province for the US, Canada, and Mexico.
TP: What advice would you give new drivers?
Alex Debogorski: Learn the virtue of patience, patience with traffic, patience with dispatch, patience with family, patience with oneself and patience with God.
TP: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Alex Debogorski: Driving truck, running equipment and scaring my grandchildren!
TP: Where do you see the trucking industry in 10 years?
Alex Debogorski: More fuel efficient trucks, more respect for the drivers, jobs coming back to North America and more trucking work between North American points.
TP: Whats next for Alex Debogorski?
Alex Debogorski: Improve my marriage, give my Children more and better advice, pray harder and hopefully a few more years before my coffin is built!(Laughing that oh so familiar Alex laugh).
TP: Did we forget anything? If you have anything to add here is the place!
Alex Debogorski: I'm working on a book which hopefully will be published in 2010, Doug Jones and Johnny Neal from Nashville are working on some songs and poetry I have written also to be published in 2010. The 4th season of Ice Road Truckers should begin shortly and I'm happy to be going home to scare the kids and be home for Christmas!
