Kelvin's Bio

Kelvin Locklear - The front man of the last two seasons of the hit CMT TV show "Trick My Truck" has spent his whole life around trucks. Since he was a youngster of 3 trucking and trucks have been in his blood. Know far and wide as the "guy who builds it even when everyone else says no", that's Kelvin. He is the lead designer at Outcast Kustoms and owner of K&L Chrome in South Carolina. Kelvin met his wife April while selling trucks and trailers after selling a truck to her father. At K&L Chrome Shop, Kelvin and April build and design custom trucks along with custom accessories. Everything from painting to frame to finish and more. They have a passion for trucking and the trucking industry and it really shows in the custom trucks they build.

TP: How did you get involved with the trucking industry?
KELVIN: My Father owned trucks from the time I was three. So, this is a way of life for me.

TP: Tell us about the first custom truck you built?
KELVIN: Back in 1997 I built a 1994 Pete to pull a race trailer. Fast car, nice truck … was a big hit at the track

TP: How did you get involved with "Trick My Truck"?
KELVIN: Early on I built parts for the show - bumpers, grills, etc. We have a custom Fabrication shop, so we could build their custom parts.

TP: Are there any future plans for you to be able to show your skills back on TV?
KELVIN: We are always in contact with different people, but it has to be the right show

TP: How difficult was it to juggle the fame from Trick My Truck and your business / personal life?
KELVIN: It was hardest being away from my family. I had great people at the shop & my wife April was running it, that made it a lot easier for me to be away from there.

TP: What is your favorite memory from Trick My Truck?
KELVIN: The kids coming up to you and saying they enjoyed the show./

TP: What happens after trick my truck? Do you stay in contact with the people who had received the custom truck?
KELVIN: Still on the road having fun at the truck shows & we get to see some of the people that we "tricked" their trucks from time to time.

TP: Tell us about your shop "K & L Chrome".
KELVIN: In the fall of 2001 April and I opened K & L Chrome Shop, and in 2005 we launched our custom Stainless Steel line of parts. We specialize in making our customers the parts they want, if you can't find the cool part you want call us we can & will build it!

TP: Tell us about K & L Racing.
KELVIN: Locklear Motorsports is a bandolero race team. My oldest son Jordan drives, he is 10 years old. It's something we get to do together, and it's a way for us to remain "cool" in the eyes of our kids. This is one of the most important things to me and April.

TP: What can you be found doing when you have downtime?
KELVIN: Racing and lounging around the house.

TP: What is the biggest goal you would like to accomplish?
KELVIN: To raise my 3 boys to enjoy what they have, and that everything they do in life do their best and have fun

TP: What are some of the most recent projects you have been working on?
KELVIN: We now are a Progressive commercial repair facility and it keeps us very busy so that is a new phase in our business that we enjoy. We are also building a cab over Pete for a guy that is in the Army. The truck belonged to his Dad, so it's really neat to build the truck and hear the awesome stories. The theme of the truck is Superman, its turning out really cool!

TP: Do you have a favorite truck show? If so, what makes it special?
KELVIN: We really enjoy the shows where we get to meet the truckers and their families, like Carlisle, PA and the shows we call "local" shows

TP: In your opinion what is the biggest obstacle truck drivers face today?
KELVIN: Truckers are going to have to get through the next phase of rules and regulations of the EPA. I think if it all works in a positive way trucks can increase their revenue.

TP: Who or what is or has been your biggest inspiration?
KELVIN: My father, for starting me out "trucking". Also all these cool truck shows, when I was young BJ and the bear, Smokie and the bandit, so I can only hope that one day someone comes up to me and says I am going into the business because of the show.

TP: Any "crazy fan" stories you want to share?
KELVIN: No crazy fan stories, but I got to meet a gentleman at Atlanta motor speedway who was in a wheelchair. He gave me a hug and a high five and told me the show made him feel like he was on top of the world. Those words and his smile was the best compliment I could have ever had. It made the hard time worth it all.

TP: Every garage has a fridge, what can we find in yours?
KELVIN: Water is all we have at the shop (it's been a hot summer).

TP: What type of music is playing in your garage? Better yet what music inspires your best work?
KELVIN: Country music is always playing, because we are the last American cowboy

TP: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
KELVIN: At the shop waiting on the next trucker to walk in and talk to me about the next cool part for his truck!!! Who knows I might be at the race track cheering on my son, Jordan….

TP: What's next for Kelvin and K & L Chrome?
KELVIN: Continuing to serve the industry that has given me and my family a great way of life! Thanks to all and Keep on Trucking!!!!

TP: Did we forget anything? If you have anything to add here is the place:
