20 QUESTIONS WITH RYAN "RYNO" TEMPLETON

June 2010
Ryan ryno templeton painting flames

Ryno's Bio

Ryan Templeton - better known as Ryno the master painter from the hit CMT TV show "Trick My Truck" was born in Orange County, CA in 1971. He has been drawing ever since he was able to pick up a pencil. He started his airbrushing career working at Coast Airbrush and that's where the whirlwind began. First working his magic with t-shirt art and moving on to banners and wall murals, also painting for the movie industry and then sticking with automotive. 90% of his business now is automotive painting but as an artist he wants to paint anything he can get his hands on.....if the money's right! Ryno has painted some of the bikes in the movie "Biker Boyz" and now has a TV show that aires on CMT called "Trick My Truck". He has been mastering the technique of custom airbrushing / painting for over 19 years now and is still learning. Spend some time looking at his gallery on his website BLAST-OF-AIR.COM and you will soon realize why his artwork is in such high demand! You can also find Ryno on Myspace, Facebook (Ryan Templeton) and Twitter as @rynoTMT

TP: How did you get started with drawing/ painting?
RYNO: I was born into an artist family and people that encouraged it... well for the most part! lol I've been drawing since I can remember and have drawings that I've done from when I was 6 years old... and yes, my mind was warped then!! haha

TP: How did you get involved with the auto / trucking industry?
RYNO: I did the water base side of airbrushing to start off my career... T-shirts, murals and faux finishing. Started doing automotive about 10 years ago with crotch rockets, which landed me the movie Biker Boyz. I painted most of the bikes in the movie. So basically I was a bike / chopper painter and never painted a semi till the show!! Inferno was the 1st rig I ever painted. I used to do 20,000 sq ft wall murals before the show, so the size difference was an easy transition and I can paint pretty much anything now!! lol

TP: Do you have formal art training?
RYNO: Skool of hard knocks is where I attended, all self taught. Well, artist always "borrow" techniques from one another... so I picked up a few tips along the way, but put my own twist to them. I also teach classes and I'm very involved with the airbrush industry, so shop talk happens all the time!!

TP: You have done some amazing paint work. What was your most challenging paint project so far?
RYNO: Over half the trucks from the show were difficult because the fact I have never painted themes like the ones that were picked. I winged over half those paintjobs, also, the fact I only had 7 days to paint and only 2 helpers!! Allegiance was the hardest because the detail, size of the truck and time to do it in!!

TP: Everyone wants to know….what happens if you make a mistake in the middle or worse near the end of a painting project? RYNO: That's one thing about custom painting, knowing how to fix your screw-up's!! I tried being a tattoo artist back in the day and that's when I realized I like my canvas cold dead steel or plastic. You cant sand off a tattoo you screw up! lol Airbrushed shadows, highlights and pin striping are a necessity and if the mistake is too bad, it can always be sanded and resprayed.

TP: Do you have a most memorable project? Was there one project that stood out or meant something special to you for a particular reason?
RYNO:/ I would have to say Ironman for a favorite. We did a frame off restoration in just 3 weeks.... give or take a few odds and ends... but nothing paint wise!! From the frame up In 7 days, deck plates and fenders in 2 days extra!! 16 to 20 hr days for 10 days straight on that one!

TP: How did you end up as the paint "guru" for "Trick My Truck"?
RYNO: It was a total blind call!! The production company was looking for artists, called Coast Airbrush and their employee gave them my shop number. My shop is connected to Coast and is owned by my best friend, very convenient!! lol 6 Months later we shot the pilot with the Inferno truck... my first rig ever painted!! lol

TP: Are there any future plans for you to be able to show your skills back on TV?
RYNO: The offers are out there but nothing really concrete. Its all talk and I don't believe anything until its in contract form! I miss doing the show and the steady paychecks, so if something does happen and the pay is right... I'm all over it!

TP: How difficult was it to juggle the fame from Trick My Truck and your business / personal life?
RYNO Most of us worked so much for the show that we never really got to enjoy the fame side of things. Although, where we did go.... being on TV has it's perks!! lol I am actually back home in CA like the show never happened and picking up the pieces of a life and shop I left behind 7 years ago. I still kept the shop thru the whole TMT adventure, just in case the show ended and it's a good thing I did. On the show I worked an average 12 hour day, 6 days a week and half on Sun.... that's the day when I did laundry and got groceries!! lol Me and my crew were painting machines. My business was shut down the whole time we were filming the show. Its easy to tell someone to bolt on an accessory piece, but try telling someone to layout flames on a car or airbrush a mural freehand or pinstripe graphics! We basically filmed a 3 season commercial for somebody elses business. I could go more into that subject.... but lets move on!! haha The deadlines were met because we stayed and got the job done, so needless to say there wasn't much of a personal life and it did get stressful at times, besides that.... have you been to Joplin? Not a very happening town, so working alot was good! lol I think the Ironman build were like days that blurred together. I do miss the fans and I tried like hell to keep up with or get back to as many people as I could, but that was a full time job in itself! lol I am a 1 man show and if cloning was possible... put me on the list!! lol If it wasn't for the fans, we wouldn't have made it 5 seasons...so a big THANK YOU AND ROCK ON!! I still to this day have no idea why the show stopped. I mean I have my own theories, but still haven't heard a thank you, @#$% you or anything from the show, kind've sad because we put our heart and souls into that project!!

TP: What is your favorite memory from Trick My Truck?
RYNO: The one thing or a few things are the responses I get from fans that write me and tell me how I have inspired them to draw and paint or go back to school, or the emails telling us how the show brought their family together on TMT night! Also helping out the truck drivers that genuinely deserved it!

TP: Tell us about your shop "Blasted"?
RYNO: My shop is in Anaheim, CA. It's a 2 bay, 40 ft deep shop that could probably fit a flat top Pete with the stacks off.... I was never a semi painter, remember??? lol My shop is connected with Coast Airbrush, the retail side of what I use, that is owned by my best friend from Jr. High, a very good friendship!!! I started painting out of my garage in Huntington Beach and got the opportunity to build out a shop at Coast, so went legit 7 years ago. I had one bay then, opened the door and was pulling in work.... then the call for TMT came!! lol I now expanded and modernized the shop to fit larger vehicles since the show stopped filming 2 years ago!! Need anything painted? Blast-Of-Air.com is my website, give me a shout!! lol

TP: We see you create paint wizardry in 4 minutes on television, how long does it really take for you to prep and paint a major project like a tractor trailer?
RYNO: We subbed the prep out after the 1st season because it held up the TV machine!! lol We had 11 days the 1st season, down to 9 days for the next 2 and the last 2 seasons, we were pumping out trucks in 7 days. It was me and 2 other helpers the whole time.. with an occasional part timer. So hence the 12 hour a day average! lol

TP: What can you be found doing when you have downtime?
RYNO: Spending most of my spare time with my son Dekoda, who will be 3 in August.... man time flies!! I also snowboard in the winter and skate the halfpipe at my shop as much as my back will let me! Golf whenever I get the chance too.

TP: What is the biggest goal you would like to accomplish?
RYNO Establishing that I have my own shop and separate me from the brand of CSM is my biggest goal. I still get emails saying they went to my shop in Joplin, MO.... I was born and raised in CA and my shop is in Anaheim (which is across the street from my house)!!! lol If only the fans knew the truth about the show. I want to be the best father I can be for my son, just keep on painting and doing what I love to do, better my skills as an artist... ......and find my happy place!!! haha

TP: What are some of the most recent projects you have been working on?
RYNO: Just finished a 1971 Chevy Nova Drag car, a few bikes and sand rails come in and out of the shop. Haven't painted one semi since the show!! Nothing like custom painting for an industry that doesnt really use custom paint!! lol Oh yeah, got the cover of Trucking magazine with a paint job on a Chevy Silverado... 1st job in the shop after the show ended. I have the freedom now to paint what and where ever I want, which is pretty kewl and very hard to get used to!! lol

TP: What is the craziest or weirdest thing you have painted?
RYNO: Body painting is always a bonus and yes I was professional about it!! lol Making people look dead on Halloween, custom painted toilet seats, nothing really crazy I guess.

TP: What advice would you give new artists
RYNO: It doesnt matter how much you read a how-to article or watch a video, its all about doing it!! Trying, succeeding or failing, but learning from that experience and better yourself for the next time you do try. I know they both have been said before... but if you really do put your mind to it, things will happen and if practice makes perfect... you better start practicing!!

TP: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
RYNO: I see myself OLDER in 10 years!! HAHA I'll be exactly the way I am today... a custom painter!! I get to do what I love for a living, so I don't think I'll ever retire!! By then, my son will be 13 and hopefully he'll be painting along side of me!! Hopefully by then, modern medicine will cure arthritis, carpeltunel and and aching back.... and the government can get their crap together and.... now I'm rambling!! Am I going to far in the future?? lol

TP: What's next for Ryno?
RYNO I think the last question is part of that and its one day at a time for Ryno these days!!

TP: Did we forget anything? If you have anything to add here is the place:
RYNO I want everyone to know the truth about the show and I wont say it on here, so check out my website, blast-of-air.com, Hit the link to myspace and read some of the blogs I wrote!! While your on there, check it out, I redid the site and it is still a work in progress!! Btw, its not kewl to promote someone else's business and build them an empire and get absolutely nothing out of it, but stabbed in the back!! OK, that's enough and lets end on a positive note... if it wasn't for the paint, most people would've never watched the show and that's all I do is make things look good!! lol I was never an actor... I was a custom painter trying to act... no the other way around. Every paintjob on that show I designed and painted, with a lil' help.... most of which were themes picked by a production co. that I had no control over and I am sorry for that!! haha Bottom line is, I was an artist before the show and gonna be the same a long time after.... so if ya ever need anything customized, give me a shout!! Thanks and ROCK ON!!

We want to thank our friend Ryno very much for being a part of the Truckerzparadise 20 Questions interviews and above all his excellent work on the custom paint he did for us all to enjoy and watch in our homes on our TVs! Ryno helped make a difference in a lot of folks lives and we wish him continued success with Blast-of-air.com, & his shop Blasted, along with success in any future endeavors!
